        "content": "<p>Vietnam rice exports stable despite Indonesian chaos<\/p>\n<p>HANOI (Reuters): Vietnam's rice exports have not been affected<br>\nby turmoil in Indonesia as most directly-signed contracts between<br>\ndealers in the two countries were delivered by March, traders<br>\nsaid yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>But some rice continued to be shipped through intermediaries,<br>\nthey added.<\/p>\n<p>\"Vietnamese exporters are not worried about payments from<br>\nselling rice to Indonesia as most contracts were concluded<br>\nthrough intermediaries who carried the risk with Indonesian<br>\nbuyers,\" one dealer in Ho Chi Minh City said.<\/p>\n<p>Figures for Vietnamese rice sold to Indonesia through<br>\nintermediaries were not immediately available.<\/p>\n<p>The dealer said direct contracts between dealers in Vietnam<br>\nand Indonesia totaling 225,000 tons of rice had been signed since<br>\nthe beginning of the year but Vietnamese exporters had defaulted<br>\non 105,000 tons of that amount.<\/p>\n<p>The defaults came when rice prices soared from the third week<br>\nof April due to worries about a prolonged drought and a<br>\ngovernment ban on new export contracts amid food security fears.<\/p>\n<p>\"There were some problems with letters of credit openings from<br>\nthe Indonesian side and Vietnamese dealers took the opportunity<br>\nto default on their shipments when prices rose,\" the dealer said.<\/p>\n<p>Hanoi stopped the signing of new rice export contracts from<br>\nmid-April, and the ban remains in place.<\/p>\n<p>Traders said last Thursday that indicative quotations for five<br>\npercent broken Vietnamese rice would be $310-315 a ton, FOB<br>\nSaigon Port, up from $275 a ton a month ago. Ten percent broken<br>\nincreased to between $305-310 last week from $270 per ton on<br>\nApril 19, they said.<\/p>\n<p>Thai exporters have suspended rice and sugar exports to<br>\nIndonesia unless the sales are backed by letters of credit from<br>\nthird countries, Thai industry sources said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>More than 500 people have been killed and thousands of shops,<br>\nhomes and offices in Jakarta have been destroyed in Indonesia's<br>\nworst unrest in decades.<\/p>",
