Vietnam plenum begins key meeting<\/p>\n
HANOI (Reuters): The powerful central committee of Vietnam's
\nruling Communist Party has begun a key meeting that will address
\nthe future of state ownership and integration into the world
\neconomy, official media reported on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The state-controlled Vietnam News Agency said the 170-member
\ncommittee gathered for the meeting in Hanoi on Monday. It is
\nexpected to last more than a week.<\/p>\n
VNA said the plenum heard an opening speech by Party General
\nSecretary Le Kha Phieu, and politburo member Nguyen Phu Trong
\nreported on four key issues included in a draft document to be
\nsubmitted to the Communist Party's Ninth Congress next year.<\/p>\n
VNA said politburo member Nguyen Van An also presented a
\nreport on amendments to party regulations to be submitted to the
\nninth congress, which is expected to held in March.<\/p>\n
Congresses are the supreme gatherings in Vietnam's political
\ncalendar, setting the tone for the next five years and beyond.<\/p>",
