        "content": "<p>Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Professor Evvy Kartini of BRIN and Founder\nof the National Battery Research Institute (NBRI) stated that\nIndonesia\u2019s efforts to achieve its grand ambition of becoming a global\nplayer in the electric battery industry are moving forward. This\nprogress is supported by the construction of electric vehicle (EV)\nbattery factories, underpinned by the country\u2019s large nickel reserves,\nwhich must undergo downstream processing to become high-value raw\nmaterials for EV batteries. Strengthening the upstream-to-downstream\nchain is also crucial to ensure that the production of battery raw\nmaterials through to downstream products has a clear market. However,\nseveral challenges confront Indonesia\u2019s EV battery development. One\nsignificant issue is the influx of EVs entering Indonesia that use\nnon-nickel-based batteries, specifically Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP)\nbatteries, which do not align with the nation\u2019s nickel downstreaming\nprogramme. Consequently, regulations and efforts are needed to promote\nthe use of nickel-based vehicles, namely those using NMC (Nickel\nManganese Cobalt) or NCA (Nickel Cobalt Aluminum) battery types.\nProfessor Evvy Kartini also highlighted the urgency of strengthening\nupstream nickel investment to add value to nickel ore, transforming it\ninto materials for EV batteries. Furthermore, the government needs to\ndevelop an EV battery recycling industry to ensure sustainability.
