Victims' kin land civil service posts<\/p>\n
BANDA ACEH, Aceh: At least 350 relatives of victims of
\nviolence allegedly committed by the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI)
\nin their decade-long military operation in the province have
\nreceived accreditation certificates as new civil servants.<\/p>\n
Diplomas were presented to them on Monday by the head of the
\nCivil Servants Administration Agency (BAKN), Sofian Effendi.<\/p>\n
According to Sofian, the measure was part of the government's
\nactions following the recent visit of President B.J. Habibie to
\nthe area.<\/p>\n
One of Habibie's promises was that relatives would receive
\npromotion to the civil service.<\/p>\n
\"To follow up on the promise, we've allocated 2,188 posts for
\nthe families of the victims,\" Sofian said as quoted by Antara.<\/p>\n
The documents were symbolically presented to eight people,
\nrepresenting the four regencies of Pidie, North Aceh, East Aceh
\nand Central Aceh.<\/p>\n
Also in attendance was Aceh Governor Syamsuddin Mahmud.<\/p>\n
Syamsuddin contended the move was not an attempted payoff to
\ncoax the families into abandoning their grievances.<\/p>\n
\"It's not true that the policy is an attempt to bribe the
\npeople here. The policy is determined as a form of sympathy and
\nhealing for our people's disappointments,\" he said. (emf)<\/p>",
