VICO clarifies 'SCTV' news<\/p>\n
Referring to a broadcast by SCTV on their News Coverage 6 on
\nthe afternoon of June 13, \"Villagers occupy land of VICO
\noperations\", we would like to respond as follows.<\/p>\n
BPMigas-VICO Indonesia is planning to drill a new well at the
\nNilam L site, an operation which will be conducted by a
\ncontractor in Saliki village, Muara Badak subdistrict, Kutai
\nKartanegara. The site was acquired in 1979 by BPMigas-VICO
\nIndonesia by an ad hoc team from Kutai Kartanegara and covers 16
\nhectares.<\/p>\n
Since June 12, dozens of villagers pitched tents at Nilam L
\nand disturbed drilling activities. The villagers also damaged the
\nwall of the ground pit. Their activity ended on June 13 and
\ndrilling has recommenced.<\/p>\n
VICO Indonesia held talks with the villagers, who were
\ndemanding compensation for the land, and local officials
\nexplained that the area concerned was within VICO's jurisdiction.
\nThe officials also asked the villagers to stop building fish
\nponds in the area.<\/p>\n
The villagers' actions to block drilling activities at Nilam
\nL, however, could result in an operational delay, which would in
\nturn cause a significant loss to government revenues from the oil
\nand gas sector.<\/p>\n
Kutai Kartanegara regency is following up on this case by
\ninviting all parties involved to discuss villagers' demands on
\nJune 17.<\/p>\n
VICO Indonesia is the operating company for the BPMigas
\nProduction Sharing Contract area in East Kalimantan, and is
\njointly owned by subsidiaries of both BP and the ENI Group.<\/p>\n
