Vice president still sides with QSAR<\/p>\n

Despite the hundreds of billions of rupiah in investor money
\nwhich was lost at PT Qurnia Subur Alam Raya (QSAR), vice
\npresident Hamzah Haz surprisingly defended the company that he
\nonce visited, and even floated the idea of taking over the
\nbankrupt company.<\/p>\n
Hamzah still believed that PT QSAR, which recently collapsed
\nwith 6,800 investors together with their Rp 460 billion (US52
\nmillion), was a legitimate business that needed the government's
\nhelp.<\/p>\n
Moreover, PT QSAR like other small and medium-sized
\nenterprises contributed foreign exchange to the state.<\/p>\n
\"When I visited the company, I was told that the company had
\nmade 155 exports,\" he said.<\/p>\n
When queried about the huge amount of money gone with the
\ncompany, Hamzah said: \"If it was not doing a legitimate business,
\nwhy didn't the police or the investors file a complaint from the
\nbeginning?\"<\/p>\n
He said he had instructed Minister of Agriculture Bungaran
\nSaragih to coordinate efforts to look into the possibility of
\nsalvaging the company.<\/p>\n
But Bungaran complained that the management of PT QSAR was
\nvery vague, and therefore, he faced difficulties to collect data
\nabout the company and its assets.<\/p>\n
\"Without complete information, it would be difficult for us to
\nsolve this PT QSAR problem,\" the minister was quoted by Antara as
\nsaying.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, a group of people from the National Mandate Party
\n(PAN) on Friday staged a rally at police headquarters in
\nSukabumi, West Java, where PT QSAR's president Ramli Araby was
\nbeing questioned by the police.<\/p>\n
They demanded the police treat Ramli fairly.<\/p>\n
PAN chairman Amien Rais, also speaker of the People's
\nConsultative Assembly, was among those who visited PT QSAR's
\noperations in Sukabumi.<\/p>\n
The police on Friday declared Ramli as a suspect in the scam
\nafter questioning him for about 18 hours.<\/p>\n
The police refused to reveal the results of the questioning.<\/p>\n
Suara Pembaruan afternoon daily, nevertheless, quoted a source
\nat the Sukabumi police office as saying that Ramli had only
\n$1,000 in the bank account that he showed them.<\/p>",
