Vice President Gibran Rakabuming visited the Keuskupan Agats Sago\nField School in Yepem Village, Asmat Regency, South Papua, on Sunday to\nobserve firsthand the development of sago as a regional flagship\ncommodity aimed at generating economic value through downstream\nprocessing.<\/p>\n
According to a statement from the Vice Presidential Secretariat in\nJakarta, the Vice President received a briefing on various sago\ndevelopment efforts that have been underway for four years. The\nprogramme integrates cultural preservation, indigenous community\nempowerment, and the processing of sago derivative products to enhance\neconomic benefits for local residents.<\/p>\n
Anton, the person in charge of the Sago Field School, explained that\nthis school has a different character compared to sago field schools in\nother regions. In Asmat, the focus is on strengthening the local economy\nbased on the community\u2019s culture.<\/p>\n
\u2018The approach here is more about strengthening local aspects. For\ninstance, in Meranti, the focus is on industrial-scale sago technology.\nHere, the discipline is local-scale, Mr Vice President. So, there will\nbe more cultural approaches here, while also developing downstream\nprocessing,\u2019 Anton said.<\/p>\n
Currently, the Asmat Sago Field School area covers approximately six\nhectares and is managed through cooperation between the diocese and the\nlocal government.<\/p>\n
In addition to serving as a centre for learning and sago development,\nthe site is also intended to strengthen the processing of value-added\nsago derivative products for the community.<\/p>\n
During the occasion, Anton also noted that the main challenge still\nfaced is access to the location, which is a crucial factor in supporting\nthe area\u2019s development.<\/p>\n
The Vice President\u2019s visit to the Sago Field School is in line with\nPresident Prabowo Subianto\u2019s directive to promote local food resources\nbased on regional potential.<\/p>\n
