Vengeful cop shoots student after quarrel<\/p>\n

A chemical engineering student died six hours after an angry
\npolice officer shot him in the head following a quarrel and short
\nmotorcycle chase involving the two here on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Emergency surgery conducted by doctors at Zainal Abidin
\nHospital failed to save the life of Muhammad Iqbal, 23, a student
\nat Syah Kuala University's school of chemical engineering. Iqbal
\nnever regained consciousness after he was shot at noon.<\/p>\n
Provincial police spokesman Adj. Sr. Comr. Dede Ahmad said the
\nofficer shot Iqbal near the Kampung Ateuk intersection after a
\npursuit on motorbikes which began in front of the Baitturrahman
\nGrand Mosque, where Iqbal allegedly struck the officer.<\/p>\n
Witnesses said the vengeful officer shot Iqbal from close
\nrange while riding his Honda GL-Pro which did not have a
\nregistration number. The bullet pierced his temple.<\/p>\n
While the officer fled, people near the scene of the incident
\nrushed Iqbal to the Military Hospital.<\/p>\n
Ahmad refused to identify the officer, who is now apparently
\nin the custody of the provincial military police.<\/p>\n
\"He breached the procedures and will face stern measures,\"
\nAhmad said.<\/p>\n
He added that the police chief, Insp. Gen. Jusuf Manggabarani,
\nhad apologized to the family of Iqbal and would cover all
\nexpenses resulting from the incident.<\/p>\n
The body of Iqbal was taken to his family's home in Deah Boro
\nvillage in the eastern suburb of Banda Aceh. His burial is
\nexpected to take place on Friday.<\/p>\n
None of his family members or relatives would comment on the
\nfatal shooting. Many Acehnese have become accustomed to brutal
\ntreatment from security forces and prefer not to comment for fear
\nof further brutality.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, a local military officer said on Thursday that
\nsecurity troops had killed 12 separatist rebels grouped under the
\nFree Aceh Movement (GAM). Eight of them shot dead in a 30-minute
\narmed clash in Alam Jeumpa, West Aceh district on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The provincial military spokesman Maj. Zaenal Muttaqin also
\nsaid three guerrillas were killed and three more arrested in a
\nmilitary ambush at Mereu in Aceh Besar district on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
However, a GAM spokesman stated that the 11 were innocent
\ncivilians.<\/p>\n
Muttaqin said another suspected rebel was shot and killed at
\nKampung Blang in North Aceh on Wednesday. He claimed a handgun
\nand two home-made bombs were seized.<\/p>\n
Security personnel have stepped up attacks against all
\nsuspected separatist-minded Acehnese following a recent series of
\nkidnappings, arson attacks and murders which have been blamed on
\nGAM.<\/p>\n
At least 50 people have been taken hostage, allegedly by the
\nrebels, over the past four months. More than 30 of have since
\nbeen released.<\/p>",
