Vanuatu PM to arrive on Sunday<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Prime Minister of Vanuatu, Maxime Carlot
\nKorman, will arrive in Indonesia on Sunday for a three-day
\nofficial visit which will be highlighted by the opening of
\ndiplomatic relations between the two countries.<\/p>\n
Relations between Indonesia and Vanuatu are presently
\nconducted through Indonesian embassies in Canberra and Port
\nMoresby and through Indonesia's permanent representative office
\nat the United Nations in New York.<\/p>\n
Located in the Southwest Pacific, the former Anglo-French
\ncolony of New Hebrides gained independence in 1980 as the
\nRepublic of Vanuatu.<\/p>\n
Under the invitation of President Soeharto, Korman's arrival
\nwill mark the first time a Vanuatu head of government has made an
\nofficial visit to Indonesia. However, in a private capacity,
\nKorman came to Indonesia in December 1994 to visit Jakarta and
\nBali.<\/p>\n
During a scheduled meeting at Merdeka Palace on Monday,
\nSoeharto and Korman are expected to tackle various issues of
\nmutual concern between the two countries.<\/p>\n
International issues are also expected to gain attention in
\nthe meeting as both countries are members of the 112-nation Non-
\nAligned Movement as well as the Group of 77 countries.<\/p>\n
Included in Korman's itinerary is a visit to the state-owned
\naircraft manufacturing company, PT IPTN, in Bandung, West Java.<\/p>\n
According to Indonesian Minister\/State Secretary Moerdiono,
\none hindrance to better economic relations is the lack of a
\ndirect air or sea link between Indonesia and Vanuatu.<\/p>\n
In addition, Vanuatu's small, predominantly Melanesian
\npopulation of 175,000 has a very limited market potential for
\nIndonesian exports. (mds)<\/p>",
