Vacation apprenticeship programs for students<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A non-governmental organization is offering
\nvacation apprenticeship programs to secondary school students.<\/p>\n
The second annual program aims to give students from low and
\nmiddle-income groups four days work experience at social
\norganizations.<\/p>\n
They would be paid Rp 5,000 (US$ 2.04) a day, Indonesian Child
\nWelfare Foundation director Widya Samsudin said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Widya said that her foundation could place 300 students in
\nthis year's program.<\/p>\n
\"Unlike their more affluent counterparts who can afford trips
\nabroad or pursue leisure activities with their friends and
\nfamilies, the apprenticeship programs exposes these youths to
\nsocial welfare issues while they use their time productively,\"
\nshe said at the foundation's seminar on youth AIDS.<\/p>\n
The foundation runs seminars for secondary school students on
\nHIV\/AIDS, talent development, youth skills and problems and other
\nissues.<\/p>\n
She said that her foundation was receiving applications for
\nthe program through the Ministry of Education and Culture.<\/p>\n
The foundation runs other youth programs in cooperation with
\nother non-governmental organizations and government agencies,
\nincluding programs on drug abuse information, entrepreneurship,
\nand the effects of globalization and industrialization.<\/p>\n
These programs were unavailable at schools and some included
\nvisits to factories and offices, Widya said.<\/p>\n
She said that apprenticeships helped develop youths'
\ninitiative and widen their horizons.<\/p>\n
\"They do not come from top schools and wealthy families, but
\nthat should not stop them from developing their potential,\" she
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Felicia, 16, a second-year student at Taman Siswa senior high
\nschool, who was at the seminar, said: \"Apart from getting more
\ninformation about AIDS, I would like to work at the foundation
\nfor more experience.\"<\/p>\n
A third-year student from the same school, Dani Gunardi, 17,
\nsaid that he wanted to use his time productively and earn money
\nthrough the vacation apprenticeship program.<\/p>\n
\"It's better than hanging around the house with nothing to
\ndo,\" Dani said.<\/p>\n
The youths discussed safe dating and development of talent and
\ninterests at the seminar, held in cooperation with the Kayu Manis
\nradio station.<\/p>\n
They also had discussed science and technology, social
\nscience, art, sport and emotional intelligence to develop an
\noverall social awareness, foundation counselor Marike said. (01)<\/p>",
