Utut loses in world chess c'ships<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesian Grandmaster Utut Adianto suffered his
\nfirst defeat at the world chess championships in Groningen, the
\nNetherlands, Thursday.<\/p>\n
Utut's defeat came in the first game of the second against GM
\nPeter Svidler of Russia on the 44th move.<\/p>\n
Utut, Indonesia's best ever chess player, is 50th in the world
\nrankings with an elo rating of 2,615. Svidler has an elo rating
\nof 2695.<\/p>\n
Svidler, playing white, started the game with the Ruy Lopez
\nopening and dominated until the 20th move.<\/p>\n
Utut eventually managed to break Svidler's tactics and
\nstrategy on the 21st move. But on the 22nd move, Utut made a
\nmistake by moving his King in the wrong direction.<\/p>\n
Svidler retook the advantage and continued with a combination
\nof moves which left Utut in a series of corners through the 44th
\nmove. Utut resigned and Svidler won the match.<\/p>\n
Utut was disappointed over his blunder and said \"I should have
\nmoved my King to the right. If I had played the correct move, I
\nmight have won the match.\"<\/p>\n
Utut, however, acknowledged his defeat and admitted the
\nRussian was the better player.<\/p>\n
\"Svidler is a tough player. I want to concentrate better in
\nthe return match on Friday (yesterday).\"<\/p>\n
In yesterday's return game even a draw could eliminate him
\nfrom the championships. Utut's only real answer is to win.<\/p>\n
Utut will play with the white pieces.<\/p>\n
In other matches Thursday, GM Anand Viswanathan of India won
\nover GM Predrag Nikolic of Georgia, GM Alexei Shirov (Spain) beat
\nGM Julio Granda Suniga (Peru), GM Ivan Sokolov (Bosnia) defeated
\nGM Vladimir Epishin (Russia), GM Andrei Sokolov (Russia) lost to
\nGM Alexander Nenashe, and GM Alexei Dereev (Russia) drew with
\ncompatriot GM Michal Krasenkov.<\/p>\n
Some 100 grandmasters are taking part in the world
\nchampionships. The winner will face GM Anatoly Karpov of Russia.
