        "content": "<p>Use of fish attractor regulated<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The government has made it mandatory for fishing<br>\ncompanies to get a permit before placing underwater fish<br>\nattraction devices.<\/p>\n<p>Ministry of Agriculture fishery director general F.X. Murdjijo<br>\nsaid the licensing procedure aimed to control the use of the<br>\ndevices.<\/p>\n<p>He said fish attraction devices enabled fishermen to catch<br>\nmore fish but could endanger the environment and fish<br>\npopulations.<\/p>\n<p>The devices are made from materials like tires, old pedicabs<br>\nand bamboo.<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of Agriculture, through a decree issued Jan. 29,<br>\nstipulates that only fishing companies with government permits<br>\ncan use the devices in water more than 200 meters deep.<\/p>\n<p>The fish attractors must be placed at least ten miles apart.<\/p>\n<p>Companies cannot place fish attractors in a way that disturbs<br>\nfish movements or shipping lines. The devices cannot be installed<br>\nless than 12 miles from the low-tide shoreline.<\/p>\n<p>The license, issued by the Fishery Directorate General, is<br>\neffective for three years and renewable.<\/p>\n<p>License holders must report to the directorate every six<br>\nmonths.<\/p>\n<p>The decree states that anyone who has set up fish attraction<br>\ndevices should apply for the license within six months of the<br>\ndecree&apos;s issuance.
