Use of bus lanes inconsistent<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A member of the City Council urged the city
\nadministration yesterday to be consistent in applying the special
\nlanes for buses and other public transportation means along major
\nstreets.<\/p>\n
Ronggo W. Thahir of the United Development Party faction told
\nAntara news agency that consistency in the application of bus
\nlanes is badly needed to help increase the mobility of the
\nvehicles transporting passengers.<\/p>\n
\"The city administration has to maintain the existence of bus
\nlanes along major thoroughfares to enable the buses to arrive at
\ntheir destinations on time,\" Ronggo said.<\/p>\n
\"If buses are not frequently trapped in traffic jams as we see
\nat present, it will attract more people to use bus services,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He added that motorists should be punished for using the bus
\nlanes.<\/p>\n
He acknowledged that the condition of most buses operating in
\nthe city remains poor, thereby discouraging people from using
\ntheir services.<\/p>\n
Ronggo said that uncontrollable traffic jams are caused mainly
\nby an imbalance between the length of the city's roads and the
\ngrowth in the number of vehicles.<\/p>\n
According to city administration data, the roads are extended
\nby an average of four percent per annum, while the number of
\nvehicles expands by 15 percent.<\/p>\n
There are about 70,000 public transportation vehicles
\noperating in the city at present. The number of passengers
\ntransported daily reaches 4.5 million, of whom 800,000 are
\nstudents, he said.<\/p>\n
The many new roads built in the city have not yet solved the
\nproblem of traffic jams because they only move the congestion
\nfrom one area to another, he said. (hhr)<\/p>",
