Usage of laser medicine gains popularity in RI<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's medical practitioners are expanding
\nthe usage of laser treatment, according to one ophthalmologist.<\/p>\n
Rumita S. Kadarisman, the chairman of Indonesian Society for
\nLaser Medicine, told the press yesterday that to further boost
\nlaser treatment the organization will sponsor a one-day seminar
\non July 22.<\/p>\n
The topic of the seminar, which will be held in cooperation
\nwith the Cikini hospital, is Laser Application Development in the
\nIndonesian Medicine.<\/p>\n
\"Our organization intends to spread laser medicine to
\nparamedics and to the general public,\" Rumita added. \"The usage
\nof laser equipment here has not yet been very optimal because it
\nis still unknown in the medical circle.\"<\/p>\n
Laser treatment was first used in Indonesia in 1975 in eye
\nsurgery at the Jakarta Cipto Mangunkusumo central hospital.<\/p>\n
The Aini eye hospital in February last year developed excimer
\nlaser for eye surgery. The surgery is to restore a patient's
\nvision so that wearing glasses or contact lenses is unnecessary.<\/p>\n
\"The development of laser treatment in Indonesia was very slow
\neven though the Society for Laser Medicine was founded in 1986,\"
\nsaid Peter Hasan, the vice chairman of the organization who is
\nalso chairman of the seminar organizing committee.<\/p>\n
\"We want to spread knowledge of laser application and to up-
\ndate our knowledge about medicine,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Rumita expressed the hope that Indonesians will not go abroad
\nfor surgery which we can be done here.<\/p>\n
\"We hope that laser treatment will reach all parts of
\nIndonesia. We hope the provincial administration which has B
\ncategory hospitals will give attention to this medicine,\" she
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Peter added that the committee expects 40 hospital
\nrepresentatives to attend the seminar. He hoped the seminar could
\npromote progress in medicine technology in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Remy J. Leimena, the general affairs director of Cikini
\nhospital said that it had installed three laser machines.<\/p>\n
According to Peter, laser equipment makes eye surgery much
\neasier because it cures the problem faster and does not cause
\nbleeding.<\/p>\n
With laser treatment, a patient does not need a blood
\ntransfusion or antibiotics and consequently he or she will not
\nneed a long stay in hospital.<\/p>\n
Leimena said the equipment can be used in several types of
\nsurgery such as dental, orthopedic, otolaryngological, and in
\nophthalmological surgery, especially in curing glaucoma and
\nremoving cataract. (05)<\/p>",
