        "content": "<p>Tokyo (ANTARA) - The United States Department of the Treasury has\nkept China, Japan, Thailand and seven other major trading partners on a\nwatch list concerning potentially unfair foreign exchange practices.<\/p>\n<p>In its semi-annual report to the US Congress on Thursday (23 July),\nthe department did not designate any trading partner as a currency\nmanipulator, a designation that could result in the imposition of US\nsanctions.<\/p>\n<p>However, the report, which evaluates economic and currency practices\nin 2025, noted that China continues to stand out among major US trading\npartners due to a lack of transparency regarding its exchange rate\npolicies and practices.<\/p>\n<p>The seven other countries on the US \u201cmonitoring\u201d list are Germany,\nIreland, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan and Vietnam.<\/p>\n<p>The US Treasury uses three criteria to assess whether a country is\nmanipulating its exchange rate to gain an unfair trade advantage.<\/p>\n<p>Major US trading partners are placed on the list if they meet two of\nthe three criteria.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding Japan, the report stated that the country did not intervene\nin the foreign exchange market during the assessment period.<\/p>\n<p>Japan was also judged to be highly transparent about its intervention\nactivities, publishing aggregate monthly data as well as details of\ndaily interventions once every three months.<\/p>\n<p>The report also noted that the yen has continued to weaken despite\nthe interest rate gap between the US and Japan narrowing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile global factors, such as volatility in financial markets and\noil prices, have likely affected the yen\u2019s exchange rate, excessive\nvolatility in the yen is undesirable,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n<p>Source: Kyodo<\/p>",
