US to Shut Down Iranian Airline Operations Starting September 23<\/p>\n

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent\nstated that all Iranian commercial airlines would cease global\noperations starting September 23 as part of secondary sanctions aimed at\nisolating Iran\u2019s civil aviation sector. \u201cOn September 23rd, all the\nIranian airlines will be shut down around the world,\u201d Bessent told the\ntelevision network CNBC, as quoted by ANTARA.<\/p>\n
International airports that insist on continuing to service Iranian\naircraft, Bessent added, will face the risk of being completely cut off\nfrom the U.S. banking system.<\/p>\n
He warned that foreign operators cannot refuel aircraft, provide\nlanding facilities, or sell passenger tickets for Iranian aircraft\nwithout risking the loss of access to the U.S. dollar clearing\nsystem.<\/p>\n
Iranian officials have not yet issued a public response regarding the\nplanned flight restrictions.<\/p>\n
Bessent also warned third parties assisting Iran that the U.S. has\nidentified the financial intermediaries facilitating those transactions.\n\u201cWe\u2019ve seen enablers throughout the world. We know who they are. They\nknow who they are, and we are putting a stop to it,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n
Regarding the possibility of China enforcing sanctions, Bessent\nemphasized that the matter had been discussed during the meeting.<\/p>\n
He noted that the U.S. was holding talks with a number of countries\nsecretly and behind the scenes, without public disclosure. Bessent added\nthat Chinese financial authorities, including People\u2019s Bank of China\nGovernor Pan Gongsheng, remained involved in the process.<\/p>\n
Bessent did not say how long and how strong the economic pressure\ncampaign against Iran would last. The U.S. cannot yet confirm whether\nthe pressure will last for one week, one month or six months. However,\nhe described the current pressure on Iran as unprecedented.<\/p>\n
The embargo on the aviation sector was imposed as the U.S. ramped up\neconomic pressure on Iran through \u201cOperation Economic Fury,\u201d amidst the\nconflict between the U.S.-Israel alliance and Iran, which is now\nentering its seventh month.<\/p>\n
The war began in late February following a series of joint\nU.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran. The conflict subsequently triggered\nshipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, an exchange of missile\nstrikes in the region, and increased pressure on Iran\u2019s trade and\nfinancial channels.<\/p>\n
