U.S. to reopen RP embassy<\/p>\n
THE PHILIPPINES: The U.S. embassy in Manila will resume public
\nservices on Thursday, two days after closing its doors due to a
\nbomb threat, with Philippine officials pointing to communist
\nrebels as the main suspects in the security scare.<\/p>\n
Six other embassies in Manila's financial district -- those of
\nAustralia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and
\nSwitzerland -- received similar bomb threats on Tuesday but did
\nnot shut down operations after informing police.<\/p>\n
\"It's not the first time these things are happening,\"
\nexecutive secretary Eduardo Ermita said on Wednesday. \"We have
\nhad a lot of threats coming from groups and the more important
\ngroups come from the left, especially the NPA.\"<\/p>\n
Communist rebels from the New People's Army (NPA) are waging
\nan insurgency in 69 of the country's 79 provinces but usually
\nattack local officials they deem to be corrupt and businesses
\nthat refuse to pay \"revolutionary war taxes\".<\/p>\n
While Ermita suggested the NPA was behind the bomb threat to
\nthe U.S. embassy on Monday evening, a senior police intelligence
\nofficial on Tuesday speculated that regional Muslim militants
\nwere responsible, although he had no details of the threats made.
