The United States is set to hold negotiations with Iran this week amid ongoing conflicts involving airstrikes that have killed over 1,340 people, with President Donald Trump expressing hopes for a peaceful agreement. US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff indicated positive signs such as resuming ship transits, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio anticipates the military campaign could conclude in weeks without ground troops. The tensions have disrupted global energy markets, shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, and caused casualties among US personnel, highlighting the urgency for diplomatic resolution.

US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff stated on Friday (27/3) that the
United States will hold a meeting with Iran at least “this week”. At the
same time, President Donald Trump is reported to desire the achievement
of a “peace agreement” amid the ongoing conflict between the US, Israel,
and Iran.

“We expect there will be a meeting this week and of course hope it
materialises. Ships are starting to pass through, this is a positive
sign, and I think the president wants a peace deal,” said Steve Witkoff
in his statement at an investment forum in Miami.

“This is what I mean by negotiations, and we won’t stop until this
process is complete. We have also proposed that,” he added.

Separately, Trump claimed that Iran has shown a willingness to open
lines of dialogue.

“They are destroyed. They want to talk, and we want it too, now they
want to make a deal,” he said.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington
expects its military campaign against Iran to be completed “in weeks,
not months”. He also emphasised that this objective can be achieved
without deploying ground forces.

Since 28 February, the United States and Israel have launched
airstrikes on Iran, which are reported to have killed more than 1,340
people.

Iran then retaliated with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel,
as well as several areas in Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries that host
US military assets. Those attacks caused casualties, infrastructure
damage, and disrupted market stability and global aviation.

In addition, at least 13 US military personnel have been reported
killed since the conflict began. This tension has also impacted rising
energy prices and disruptions to shipping routes through the Strait of
Hormuz.
",
