        "content": "<p>The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced it will\ntighten restrictions on international students and exchange visitors by\nlimiting their authorised period of stay to a maximum of four years,\nunless an extension is approved by the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNon-immigrant students (F visa) and exchange visitors (J visa) will\nbe admitted for the duration of their specific programme, not to exceed\na maximum period of four years,\u201d the department stated in a release on\nits website on Thursday (16\/7).<\/p>\n<p>According to the statement, the final rule \u201cformally eliminates the\n\u2018duration of status\u2019 loophole\u201d that allowed foreign students, exchange\nvisitors, and others to remain in the US indefinitely and \u201cwithout\nroutine government oversight\u201d. The Duration of Status provision\npermitted foreign nationals to stay in the US as long as they were\nactively pursuing the purpose of their visa, rather than setting a fixed\ndate by which they must leave the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor nearly half a century, the outdated duration of status system\nhas jeopardised national security and created a fertile environment for\nimmigration fraud,\u201d said US Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne\nMullin, accusing thousands of foreign students of abusing the US\nimmigration system.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Fanta Aw, executive director and CEO of NAFSA, a\nUS-based association of international educators, described the DHS\ndecision as \u201ca misguided and unnecessary policy change that injects\nuncertainty, bureaucracy, and fear into a system that has long worked\neffectively.\u201d She added, \u201cIt signals to the world\u2019s best students and\nscholars that the United States\u2019 welcome, predictability, and commitment\nhave diminished.\u201d<\/p>",
