        "content": "<p>U.S. to focus on expanded trade at APEC<\/p>\n<p>Reuters, Washington<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Trade Representative Robert Zoellick will carry<br>\nWashington's vision of expanded trade in the Asia-Pacific region<br>\nto the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting opening on<br>\nWednesday in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, his office said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\"I look forward to meeting with my fellow ministers and<br>\ndiscussing how to expand the benefits of trade throughout our<br>\ncountries,\" Zoellick said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Zoellick will outline U.S. policies to expand trade, freedom<br>\nand prosperity by pursuing trade liberalization through the Asia-<br>\nPacific region, the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. trade official noted the gathering at the Mexican<br>\nbeach resort would be the first meeting of APEC trade ministers<br>\nsince China and Taiwan joined the World Trade Organization last<br>\nDecember.<\/p>\n<p>He added that U.S. Senate passage of a bill last week that<br>\nwould give the White House broad powers to negotiate new trade<br>\npacts \"provides momentum for American economic leadership.\"<\/p>\n<p>U.S. trading partners have recently criticized the Bush<br>\nadministration over decisions seen at odds with free-trade<br>\nprinciples, such as imposing hefty tariffs on steel imports and<br>\nsigning new farm legislation doling out billions in subsidies to<br>\nAmerican farmers.<\/p>\n<p>Zoellick this week will likely hear more on those issues as<br>\nwell as other simmering trade disputes.<\/p>\n<p>On the eve of the 21-member APEC meeting, Zoellick is<br>\nscheduled to hold talks in Puerto Vallarta with Mexican Economy<br>\nSecretary Luis Ernest Derbez and Canadian Trade Minister Pierre<br>\nPettigrew.<\/p>\n<p>Derbez said last week that differences over trade in sugar and<br>\nhigh fructose corn syrup and the opening of U.S. roads to Mexican<br>\ntransport trucks would be at the forefront of those discussions.<\/p>",
