U.S. to focus on expanded trade at APEC<\/p>\n

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Zoellick will carry
\nWashington's vision of expanded trade in the Asia-Pacific region
\nto the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting opening on
\nWednesday in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, his office said on Monday.<\/p>\n
\"I look forward to meeting with my fellow ministers and
\ndiscussing how to expand the benefits of trade throughout our
\ncountries,\" Zoellick said in a statement.<\/p>\n
Zoellick will outline U.S. policies to expand trade, freedom
\nand prosperity by pursuing trade liberalization through the Asia-
\nPacific region, the statement said.<\/p>\n
The U.S. trade official noted the gathering at the Mexican
\nbeach resort would be the first meeting of APEC trade ministers
\nsince China and Taiwan joined the World Trade Organization last
\nDecember.<\/p>\n
He added that U.S. Senate passage of a bill last week that
\nwould give the White House broad powers to negotiate new trade
\npacts \"provides momentum for American economic leadership.\"<\/p>\n
U.S. trading partners have recently criticized the Bush
\nadministration over decisions seen at odds with free-trade
\nprinciples, such as imposing hefty tariffs on steel imports and
\nsigning new farm legislation doling out billions in subsidies to
\nAmerican farmers.<\/p>\n
Zoellick this week will likely hear more on those issues as
\nwell as other simmering trade disputes.<\/p>\n
On the eve of the 21-member APEC meeting, Zoellick is
\nscheduled to hold talks in Puerto Vallarta with Mexican Economy
\nSecretary Luis Ernest Derbez and Canadian Trade Minister Pierre
\nPettigrew.<\/p>\n
Derbez said last week that differences over trade in sugar and
\nhigh fructose corn syrup and the opening of U.S. roads to Mexican
\ntransport trucks would be at the forefront of those discussions.<\/p>",
