        "content": "<p>U.S. to close consulate in Medan<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The United States plans to close its consulate<br>\ngeneral in Medan, North Sumatra, as part of on-going efforts to<br>\ndownsize its overseas administrative facilities and cut spending.<\/p>\n<p>The Medan office is one of 19 American diplomatic missions<br>\nwhich will be closed according to an announcement made by the<br>\nState Department in Washington on Tuesday, Reuters reported.<\/p>\n<p>The other 18 missions include three embassies -- Equatorial<br>\nGuinea, the Seychelles and Western Samoa -- and 15 consulates<br>\nwhich include: Brisbane in Australia; Cebu in the Philippines;<br>\nand Udorn in Thailand.<\/p>\n<p>Besides Medan, the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta oversees two<br>\nconsulates general in Jakarta and Surabaya (East Java), and a<br>\nconsular agency in Denpasar (Bali).<\/p>\n<p>The State Department and foreign aid have been prime targets<br>\nfor spending cuts as Washington seeks to reduce its huge budget<br>\ndeficit.
