U.S. suspends visa processing<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Two hundred people applying for visas at the
\nUnited States embassy in Jakarta complained yesterday that
\nembassy was refusing to process their applications.<\/p>\n
Craig J. Stromme, the United States Information Service (USIS)
\nattache confirmed that the embassy has suspended visa processing
\ndue to a lack of U.S. government funding authority and the
\nconsequent furloughing of personnel.<\/p>\n
He told The Jakarta Post yesterday that no visa applications
\nwill be accepted until the funding authority is restored.<\/p>\n
Applications for visas before and on Dec. 15 had been
\nprocessed normally, he said.<\/p>\n
This is the second suspension of visa processing by the U.S.
\nembassy in Jakarta since the White House and the Republican-led
\ncongress failed to resolve differences over the federal budget in
\nthe middle of last month. The circumstances forced U.S. embassies
\nand consulates all over the Asia-Pacific region to issue
\nstatements regretting the suspension of services.<\/p>\n
Sources at the U.S. embassy in Jakarta said yesterday that
\nafter last month's suspension almost 600 people applied for U.S.
\nvisas every day.<\/p>\n
In related development the United States Commercial and
\nInformation Center said in a release yesterday that USIS Jakarta
\nhas decided to relocate its information Center\/Zorinsky Library
\nfrom Wisma Metropolitan II to the USIS office at Medan Merdeka
\nSelatan No. 4 after a close examination of its budget.<\/p>\n
The release signed by Kathleen J. Brahney, Information Center
\nDirector, said the new facility will be called the Zorinsky
\nResearch and Information Service (ZoRIS).<\/p>\n
\"In order to facilitate the relocation of our services, the
\nZorinsky Library at Wisma Metropolitan II will close as of Dec.
\n19, 1995. We expect our new facility to be operational in mid to
