        "content": "<p>U.S. sets up Iraqi trade bank<\/p>\n<p>WASHINGTON: The U.S. governor Iraq, Paul Bremer, has created a<br>\nTrade Bank of Iraq, opening a global race for a potentially<br>\nlucrative contract to run it, an official said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Bremer, on a week-long visit to the United States to brief<br>\nofficials on the reconstruction, signed an order creating the<br>\ntrade bank at the weekend, Treasury Department spokesman Tony<br>\nFratto said.<\/p>\n<p>The bank would issue and confirm letters of credit --<br>\nbasically payment guarantees -- to smooth trade flows, boosting<br>\nimports such as heavy construction equipment and also freeing up<br>\nexports, particularly of oil.<\/p>\n<p>Bremer, the U.S.-appointed civilian administrator of Iraq,<br>\nwould name a president of the Trade Bank of Iraq \"well before<br>\nAugust\", Fratto said.<\/p>\n<p>The newly installed bank president would then select a banking<br>\nconsortium for a one-year extendible contract to operate the<br>\nfacility. -- AFP<\/p>",
