U.S. sees RI making progress in curbing piracy<\/p>\n

The U.S. government acknowledges that Indonesia has been making
\nsignificant progress in the protection of intellectual property
\nrights although the country remains on a watch list, according to
\nMinister of Industry and Trade Rini M. Soewandi.<\/p>\n
\"The U.S. sees that we (Indonesia) have made several
\nimprovements,\" Rini told reporters on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
She pointed to the new law and rulings related to the
\nprotection of intellectual property rights, and various campaign
\nprograms to educate businesses.<\/p>\n
She added that her office and the police were planning to set
\nup a special office aimed at handling problems related to piracy
\nof products.<\/p>\n
The U.S. government classifies countries into three categories
\naccording to their performance in intellectual property rights
\nprotection.<\/p>\n
The Priority Foreign Country category is given to countries
\nwith the worst conduct in intellectual property rights
\nprotection, followed by Priority Watch List and Watch List
\ncategories.<\/p>\n
In the past years, Indonesia has been criticized by the U.S.
\nfor a lack of seriousness in taking firm measures against the
\npiracy of computer software, video compact discs, books and
\ninfringement of pharmaceutical patents.<\/p>\n
Rini said that despite the positive assessment, efforts to
\nimprove intellectual property rights protection must be continued
\nbecause the country was still in the Watch List category with a
\npossible sanction of an embargo against local export products by
\nthe U.S. government.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, marketing director of PT Microsoft Indonesia Ari
\nKunwidodo told The Jakarta Post that significant improvements in
\nintellectual property rights protection could only be judged by
\nthe number of pirated computer software products this year.<\/p>\n
He said that based on the Business Software Alliance report,
\nin 2000, some 89 percent of computer software products here were
\npirated.<\/p>\n
He said that if piracy activities declined, then there was
\nimprovement in intellectual property rights protection.<\/p>\n
Ari urged the House of Representatives to quickly approve the
\nproposed law on computer software to help curb piracy.<\/p>",
