Iran has condemned the expansion of United States sanctions aimed at\nisolating its economy. Tehran described Washington\u2019s latest policy as a\n\u2018serious violation of the law\u2019, while expressing confidence that many\ncountries will not join the pressure campaign.<\/p>\n
The criticism came nearly six months after the conflict between the\nUS and Iran began without a clear resolution. US Treasury Secretary\nScott Bessent announced the latest sanctions package on Monday\n(24\/8\/2026), but stopped short of implementing some of the harshest\noptions that Washington had previously threatened.<\/p>\n
Bessent said countries that continue to trade with Iran risk being\nexcluded from the US dollar-based financial system. However, he did not\nsay when the measure would be applied or which countries could be\ntargeted. According to Bessent, those countries would be given time to\ncomply with Washington\u2019s new directives.<\/p>\n
Iran\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs assessed that the latest US\nsanctions are not merely economic pressure against Tehran, but also a\nthreat to international law and the United Nations Charter. In a\nstatement, the Iranian government stressed that the issue now has a\nbroader scope.<\/p>\n
\u2018The matter is no longer limited to Iran,\u2019 the Iranian Ministry of\nForeign Affairs said, as reported by Reuters on Wednesday (26\/8\/2026).\nThe ministry also stated that countries that value their sovereignty and\nnational interests will not accept actions deemed to be violations of\nthe law.<\/p>\n
\u2018No honourable country that values its sovereignty and national\ninterests will accept the normalisation of such serious violations of\nthe law and systematic intimidation,\u2019 it said.<\/p>\n
The US Treasury Department in its latest package announced sanctions\nagainst 60 individuals, entities and vessels. However, the list did not\ninclude Chinese financial institutions that have long been suspected of\nfacilitating Iranian oil trade.<\/p>\n
China has been the largest buyer of Iranian oil for several years.\nHowever, the US blockade of Iranian ports has halted the flow of oil to\nChina since Washington reimposed the blockade in mid-July.<\/p>\n
Trump previously said he expected to host Chinese President Xi\nJinping next month. At the same time, Washington is seeking to avoid\nrestrictions on China\u2019s critical mineral exports.<\/p>\n
Beijing said on Tuesday that its cooperation with Iran is carried out\nwithin the framework of international law and should not be interfered\nwith by other parties.<\/p>\n
Iranian Economy Minister Ali Madanizadeh said China and Russia do not\naccept the US policy. He also predicted that other countries will resist\nWashington\u2019s sanctions.<\/p>\n
Amid the economic pressure, a number of signals have emerged pointing\nto the possible reopening of mediation channels to end the war. The\nconflict, which began with US and Israeli attacks on Iran, has halted\nmost shipping activity in the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n
Before the conflict, the Strait of Hormuz was a vital route for about\none-fifth of the world\u2019s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.<\/p>\n
Iran and Oman said on Tuesday that they had discussed a proposal to\nestablish a \u2018joint temporary navigation corridor\u2019 in the Strait of\nHormuz. The two countries also discussed plans to clear mines from the\nwaterway.<\/p>\n
US President Donald Trump repeated his earlier claim that all mines\nin the Strait of Hormuz had been removed or detonated.
