U.S., RI to boost trade ties<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A delegation of almost 100 senior U.S. business
\nexecutives will be in Jakarta from March 12 to March 14 to
\npromote U.S.-Indonesia trade investment relations and participate
\nin a series of programs to understand ASEAN.<\/p>\n
The delegation will be led by chairman of the U.S.- ASEAN
\nBusiness Council, George David, who is president and CEO of
\nUnited Technologies Corporation.<\/p>\n
Delegation members include the former U.S. Senator and
\nTreasury Secretary, Lloyd Bentsen, the former U.S. Secretary of
\nState, Alexander Haig, American education and public policy
\nleader Walter Shorenstein, and Laura D'Andrea Tyson, a former
\nNational Economic Advisor.<\/p>\n
The first day of the group's visit to Jakarta will include
\nparticipation in the first ASEAN Business Summit, being organized
\nby the ASEAN Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the council said.<\/p>\n
At the summit, David will speak on ASEAN: Strategic Realities
\nin the Global Era. Haig will speak on ASEAN in the Eyes of the
\nGlobal Strategist.<\/p>\n
On the second day the delegation will participate in bilateral
\nU.S.-Indonesia activities, the highlight of which will be a
\nreception and dinner with the coordinating minister for
\nproduction and distribution, Hartarto<\/p>\n
The group will also hold discussions with the U.S. committee
\nof the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry to examine
\nways to broaden and deepen the two nations' economic
\nrelationship.<\/p>\n
\"It is vital that we increase U.S.-Indonesia trade
\ninvestment,\" said the council's president, Ernest Z. Bower.<\/p>\n
\"Both the U.S. and Indonesia have benefited greatly from the
\nstrong economic relations between our countries but there exists
\nroom for even greater flows of trade, investment, capital, and
\ntechnology,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"It is particularly important that we increase links between
\nU.S. and Indonesian small and medium businesses, accelerate
\ntechnology cooperation, and enhance joint human resource
\ndevelopment efforts.\"<\/p>\n
Trade between the U.S. and Indonesia was worth US$12.2 billion
\nin 1996, up 132 percent from 1990. (hen)<\/p>",
