        "content": "<p>U.S.-RI Society comes to town<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The United States-Indonesia Society, which was<br>\ninaugurated in Washington just over a year ago, will make its<br>\ndebut in Indonesia tonight with a gala appearance.<\/p>\n<p>Hosting a reception to introduce the organization at the<br>\nAryaduta Jakarta hotel are the two co-chairs of the board of<br>\ntrustees, Paul Wolfowitz and Emil Salim, and the society's<br>\npresident, Edward Masters.<\/p>\n<p>The United States-Indonesia Society was formed in February<br>\n1994 as a private nonprofit organization after a group of<br>\nIndonesians and Americans with firsthand experience in both<br>\ncountries became concerned by what seemed to be growing bilateral<br>\nproblems and a lack of knowledge on United States' part about<br>\nIndonesia's culture, history, general aspirations and<br>\ngovernmental system.<\/p>\n<p>Wolfowitz and Masters both served as American ambassadors to<br>\nIndonesia while Emil, an American-trained economist, served in<br>\nPresident Soeharto's cabinet for over 20 years until 1993.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesian senior economist Sumitro Djojohadikusumo and former<br>\nU.S. Secretary of State George P. Shultz sit as honorary co-<br>\nchairs of the board of advisors.<\/p>\n<p>The group had its official inauguration at the Mayflower Hotel<br>\nin Washington in October 1994, an event that was attended by<br>\nabout 400 guests, including U.S. Secretary of Commerce Ron Brown,<br>\nwho was the guest of honor, and Winston Lord, the U.S. Secretary<br>\nof State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs.<\/p>\n<p>The society, which is convinced that sound U.S.-Indonesia ties<br>\nare of growing importance in today's complex world, felt the need<br>\nfor an organization to focus on this relationship and help foster<br>\nbetter understanding of Indonesia in the United States and the<br>\nrelationship between the two countries.<\/p>\n<p>The society's activities include publications of various books<br>\nabout the roles both Indonesia and America play, professional<br>\norientation tours including of U.S. congressional staff, the<br>\ngranting of scholarships, organizing cultural events, speeches<br>\nand interviews, conferences and lectures.
