US Republican Senator Bernie Moreno has announced plans to introduce legislation tightening restrictions on Chinese vehicles, hardware, software, and partnerships in the American automotive market, citing national security concerns. This builds on previous actions by President Joe Biden and aims to prevent Chinese-made cars from entering the US, with Moreno urging international allies like Latin America, Mexico, Canada, and Europe to adopt similar standards. The proposal has strong backing from US automakers and trade groups seeking to protect the domestic market from Chinese competition.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Republican Party Senator in the United States
(US), Bernie Moreno, has firmly announced that his side is drafting a
bill to tighten the circulation of vehicles originating from China in
the US automotive market. CarnewsChina reported on Wednesday (1/4) local
time that the bill will also limit the circulation of hardware,
software, and partnerships related to products from China. This was
stated by Moreno at an Automotive Forum event ahead of the opening of
the New York Auto Show. In this regard, he emphasised that “there will
never be a scenario where Chinese-made cars enter our market.” The
United States’ concerns regarding vehicles and technology products made
in China stem from national security reasons. The regulation also
continues what was previously done by Joe Biden in January 2025. “We do
not allow Huawei to enter our telecommunications infrastructure. We will
not allow Chinese car manufacturers to enter this market. We will
prevent cancer from entering our market, and we will need other
countries to undergo chemotherapy,” said Moreno. In February, Moreno
also criticised Waymo during a Senate hearing for its partnership with
Geely, the parent company of Chinese brand Zeekr. He accused the
Alphabet-owned company of going against US leadership goals by using
Chinese-made vehicles for its robotaxi programme. Beyond domestic
measures, Moreno urged international allies to align with US standards.
“What I expect is for Latin America, Mexico, Canada, and Europe to adopt
the same standards as us now,” he said. The proposed bill has strong
support from US car manufacturers and trade groups. Recently, major
automotive trade organisations have urged the government to maintain
strict barriers against Chinese car producers, emphasising the need to
protect the domestic market.
",
