U.S. nuke tests criticized<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian government called on the United
\nStates yesterday to review its decision to conduct subcritical
\nnuclear weapons tests, saying it contradicts the spirit of the
\nComprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT).<\/p>\n
The Indonesian foreign ministry expressed \"deep concern\" over
\nthe United States' latest subcritical test on July 2.<\/p>\n
\"The Indonesian government urges the U.S. government to review
\nits decision to conduct a planned series of subcritical
\nexperiments,\" the ministry said.<\/p>\n
It said such tests were not conducive to global disarmament
\nefforts, particular nuclear disarmament efforts.<\/p>\n
The foreign ministry said that during last year's CTBT
\nnegotiations, Indonesia insisted subcritical experiments be
\nincluded in the treaty.<\/p>\n
But Indonesia acquiesced in the spirit of compromise in order
\nto help finalize the treaty.<\/p>\n
The foreign ministry said the recent subcritical tests
\ndeprecates the spirit of cooperation shown by Indonesia during
\nthe CTBT negotiations.<\/p>\n
The foreign ministry maintained that while the tests aimed to
\nimprove the safety of the U.S. nuclear arsenal, they could also
\nincrease the quality of the weapons which contradicts the spirit
\nof the CTBT.<\/p>\n
The CTBT aims to keep a check on the development and
\nqualitative improvement of nuclear weapons with the goal of
\nending the inception and proliferation of nuclear weapons. (mds)<\/p>",
