U.S. most popular foreign study destination<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The United States is the most popular
\ndestination for Indonesian students wishing to study abroad,
\naccording to coordinators of overseas education.<\/p>\n
\"The United States is still seen as the most prestigious
\ndestination,\" according to Henny Ardi of LIA Overseas Training
\nand Travel.<\/p>\n
She was speaking on the sidelines of an international
\neducation fair here Sunday. Aimed at providing information to
\nhigh school and university graduates seeking to further their
\nstudies abroad, the fair will also be held in Bandung,
\nYogyakarta, Semarang, and Surabaya.<\/p>\n
Universities and colleges from 18 countries are taking part;
\nthey include the United States, Australia, New Zealand, the
\nUnited Kingdom, Switzerland and France.<\/p>\n
Participants said the most popular fields of study were
\nEnglish language programs, business administration, engineering,
\nhotel management and aviation.<\/p>\n
Indonesia, the United States and Malaysia have recently formed
\ntwin college concepts for hotel management and aviation
\neducation.<\/p>\n
The President of Southwind Aviation Academy of the United
\nStates, Robert Harper III, said that a pilot school was started
\nin Jakarta this year in cooperation with his country's Federal
\nAviation Authority and LIA Overseas Training and Travel.<\/p>\n
Harper said the seven-month program aims to train Indonesians
\nin aviation English and aviation knowledge; five months of the
\nstudy period are spent on practical training in the United
\nStates.<\/p>\n
Director of studies at the Institute of Hotel Training Joezhar
\nN. Beten said a twin college program in hotel management under
\nLIA-Bhakti Mitra was established this year for Indonesian
\nstudents.<\/p>\n
Students are taught six months of theory in Indonesia and six
\nmonths of practical training in Malaysia.<\/p>\n
Hanief, from the Educational Advising service of American
\nIndonesian Education Foundation, advised Indonesian students to
\napply to American colleges and universities 11 to 18 months in
\nadvance.<\/p>\n
Roland A. Fischer, director of Saint Cloud State University,
\nin Texas, said that international students considering studies in
\nthe United States must maintain their full-time student status,
\nbe in good academic standing, have an authorized work permit and
\ncomplete their studies within the specified timeframe.<\/p>\n
However, he said, international students would still be
\nallowed to work 20 hours a week on campus and pursue practical
\ntraining related to their fields of study for 14 months after
\ngraduation.<\/p>\n
American university courses for foreigners cost between
\nUS$6,000 and $10,000 a year.<\/p>\n
American immigration authorities plan to place a tracking
\nsystem on foreign students in the United States in 1999, Fischer
