U.S. meets allies for nuclear talks<\/p>\n
SOUTH KOREA: Top nuclear negotiators from South Korea, the
\nUnited States and Japan held discussions here on Thursday to lay
\nthe groundwork for the resumption of talks next month with North
\nKorea over its nuclear weapons program.<\/p>\n
After more than a year of stalemate with Pyongyang, the
\nsecretive state on Saturday agreed to re-open the six-way
\nnegotiations -- an announcement that came with key new aid
\ninitiatives from South Korea.<\/p>\n
Both Japan and the United States have expressed some
\nhesitation about Seoul's massive offer to stream electricity into
\nthe North if it gives up its nuclear ambitions.<\/p>\n
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Washington
\nwanted to ensure the focus remained on the North's disarmament,
\nwhile Japan said Pyongyang had gone back on its promises before.<\/p>\n
Thursday's meeting brought together South Korean Deputy
\nForeign Minister Song Min-Soon, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State
\nChristopher Hill and Kenichiro Sasae, director general of Japan's
\nforeign ministry's Asia-Oceania affairs bureau.<\/p>\n
Details of the meeting were not available, but Hill said after
\nthe meeting the format of the six-party talks, which also
\nincluded China and Russia, was discussed.<\/p>\n
