U.S. lauds RI's forestry policies<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Three U.S. politicians announced their support
\nof Indonesia's recent forestry policies to Minister of Forestry
\nDjamaludin Suryohadikusumo in Washington on Friday.<\/p>\n
U.S. Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbit, Pat Roberts, who
\nchairs the Congressional Agriculture Committee, and Senator J.
\nBennet Johnston from Louisiana cited Djamaludin's sanctions
\nagainst forestry concessionaires violating government regulations
\nas positive steps, Antara reported Saturday.<\/p>\n
Aside from canceling a number of concession rights, Djamaludin
\ntook over 49 percent of the stakes in 28 concessions to guarantee
\nsustainable the management of forests last year.<\/p>\n
Djamaludin was in the United States from the end of last month
\nto attend a meeting on sustainable development held by the United
\nNations, to meet World Bank executives and to brief a number of
\nU.S. officials on the development of Indonesia's forestry sector.<\/p>\n
Several American timber companies, such as Weyerhauser and
\nGeorgia Pacific, were actively in logging Indonesian forests
\nthroughout the 1970s and into the early 1980s.<\/p>\n
Antara quoted Djamaludin as saying that the World Bank,
\nsensing progress in Indonesia's forestry programs, was offering
\nto extend forestry related aid.<\/p>\n
The World Bank, in its 1993 country report on Indonesia,
\nreported that the country's logging activities were above
