The war between the United States and Iran is escalating further. A\ndrone struck a US-owned gas storage tanker, setting it ablaze at the\nport of Damietta in Egypt, on the Mediterranean Sea.<\/p>\n
As reported by Reuters on Thursday (30\/7\/2026), the incident was\ndisclosed by the British maritime security firm Ambrey. A statement from\nEgypt\u2019s Ministry of Petroleum also confirmed a fire at the port.<\/p>\n
Three trade sources familiar with the incident said the drone hit the\nfloating storage tanker Energos Winter, causing a fire that spread to\nanother vessel, the Gaslog Salem. Two separate security sources said the\nexplosion was most likely caused by a drone attack.<\/p>\n
The Energos Winter was reported to have been hit by an unidentified\nprojectile, causing a fire that was subsequently extinguished, according\nto the British maritime risk management group Vanguard. It remains\nunclear who was responsible for the incident, which occurred shortly\nafter Iran launched a missile attack on US forces in Jordan, and\nWashington and Saudi Arabia struck Iran-backed paramilitary groups in\nIraq.<\/p>\n
As previously reported, US President Donald Trump threatened\nretaliation against Iran, and Yemen\u2019s Houthi group declared a naval\nblockade against Saudi Arabia, apparently widening the conflict to its\nbroadest extent since the US and Israel began bombarding Iran in\nFebruary.<\/p>\n
Through a video uploaded on social media, Reuters was able to verify\nthe location based on port infrastructure, storage tanks, and vessel\ntracking data consistent with archive and satellite imagery.<\/p>\n
The vessels were identified as \u201cENERGOS WINTER (IMO: 9256614)\u201d and\n\u201cGASLOG SALEM (IMO: 9638915)\u201d based on matching masts, sterns, hulls,\nand foredecks in archive imagery. The date was corroborated by\nsupporting media reports, and Egypt\u2019s petroleum ministry confirmed the\nfire at the port. No earlier version of the video was found to have been\nuploaded online before 29 July.<\/p>\n
The Energos Winter is a floating storage and regasification unit\n(FSRU) with a storage capacity of 138,250 cubic metres. It is owned by\nthe US-based company Energos Infrastructure. Its technical, safety, and\ncommercial operations are managed by Wilhelmsen Ship Management, also an\nAmerican company.<\/p>\n
Egypt\u2019s petroleum ministry stated that the fire occurred on a\ngasification vessel and a storage vessel at the port of Damietta, and\nwas promptly handled in accordance with an emergency response plan\napproved by the firefighting and security teams.<\/p>\n
Petroleum Minister Karim Badawi visited the scene to oversee the\nresponse efforts, the statement said.
