U.S. fugitive arrested over money embezzlement<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The police arrested Wednesday a United States
\nnational wanted by Interpol for the alleged embezzlement of
\nUS$3.5 million from the company he worked for in the U.S.<\/p>\n
Mursanudin A. Ghani, spokesman for the Directorate General of
\nImmigration, said Steven Coy Higley was arrested Wednesday at
\nAtlet Century Park Hotel, Central Jakarta, and handed over to the
\ndirectorate general's office soon after.<\/p>\n
The U.S. Embassy here asked the authorities to detain the man
\nuntil the U.S. police arrived to take him back to the U.S., the
\nrelease said Thursday.<\/p>\n
\"The embassy has also revoked the man's passport,\" it said.<\/p>\n
The release said Higley fled to Indonesia after being accused
\nof embezzling $3.5 million from the Bankers Alliance Corporation.
\nHe was the company's finance director. It is not clear when the
\nalleged fraud took place.<\/p>\n
A. Ghani said Higley entered Indonesia on Jan. 8 via the
\nSoekarno-Hatta International Airport in Cengkareng with a limited
\nstay permit issued by the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.<\/p>\n
He then worked as a management consultant at PT Panca Perkasa
\nInti Construction Jakarta.<\/p>\n
He has a limited stay card issued by the South Jakarta
\nimmigration office.<\/p>\n
Not long after the arrest, an Indonesian woman visited Higley
\nat the immigration office. She identified herself as Ninin and
\nsaid she worked at the National Institute of Sciences. She asked
\nimmigration officials to release Higley.<\/p>\n
\"I'm ready to stop working as a civil servant,\" the woman
\nsaid. It was not clear if this meant she would do anything to
\nhave the man freed.<\/p>\n
Higley is being detained at Immigration quarantine in
\nCengkareng, West Jakarta. (03)<\/p>",
