U.S. embargo on Iran regretted<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian government has expressed its
\nregret over the embargo on Iran unilaterally imposed by the
\nUnited States.<\/p>\n
\"In light of the recent decision by the United States to
\nimpose an economic and trade embargo on Iran, the Indonesian
\ngovernment regrets this development,\" according to a statement
\nfrom the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.<\/p>\n
Dialog and negotiation are the most tenable and effective way
\nof resolving disputes between nations, it stated.<\/p>\n
U.S. President Bill Clinton announced on Sunday that he would
\nsign an executive order cutting all U.S. trade and investment
\nwith Iran to hinder Tehran's alleged support of international
\nterrorism and attempts to build nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n
Tehran has continually denied the allegations and deemed
\nWashington's actions as \"disgraceful\".<\/p>\n
The foreign ministry also released a statement yesterday
\nconveying concern over the continuing violence in Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n
Indonesia is \"deeply concerned at the resumption of
\nhostilities in Sri Lanka\", the ministry stated.<\/p>\n
In a direct breach of the existing cease-fire, the Liberation
\nTigers Tamil Eelam attacked government ships at Trincomalee on
\nApril 19 and an army camp a few days later.<\/p>\n
\"The attacks constitute a unilateral act by the Liberation
\nTigers Tamil Eelam in violation of the cease-fire agreement,
\nwhich it had earlier agreed on with the Sri Lankan government,\"
\nthe ministry stated.<\/p>\n
It called on the Liberation Tigers Tamil Eelam to cease
\nhostilities and return to the dialog process to find a peaceful
\nsolution to the conflict.<\/p>\n
\"The government of Indonesia is of the opinion that any
\nfurther acts of violence will only lead to the renewal of the
\ntragedy that has already brought immense suffering to the people
\nof Sri Lanka,\" the ministry said. (mds)<\/p>",
