        "content": "<p>Istanbul (ANTARA) \u2013 US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth on Wednesday\n(28 October) called for the establishment of an \u201cambitious\u201d defence\ncooperation framework with the 11-member ASEAN bloc.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing ASEAN defence ministers, Hegseth described next year\u2019s\n50th anniversary of US\u2013ASEAN relations as an \u201cimportant milestone\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo recognise this milestone, we propose working together to develop\na US\u2013ASEAN defence cooperation framework, a practical framework that\nwill guide our cooperation over the next few years,\u201d Hegseth said.<\/p>\n<p>He stressed what he called \u201ca very critical few years ahead\u201d while\nspeaking at a joint meeting with ASEAN defence ministers in Cebu City,\nthe Philippines, which currently holds the ASEAN chairmanship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur approach can be described as strong, calm and clear. Strong\nenough to deter coercion and aggression, calm enough to avoid\nunnecessary escalation or public drama, and allowing our actions to\nspeak for themselves,\u201d Hegseth said.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun was absent from this year\u2019s ASEAN\nDefence Ministers\u2019 Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus). Beijing instead assigned\nthe Chinese Embassy\u2019s defence attach\u00e9 in Manila to represent China at\nthe meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will not always agree on everything, nor do we need to,\u201d Hegseth\ntold his ASEAN counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut agreement on basic principles is enough to support practical\ncooperation in areas where our shared interests overlap and are clear,\u201d\nhe added.<\/p>\n<p>Hegseth said the United States would work with Singapore, which will\nhold the ASEAN chairmanship next year, to develop the defence\ncooperation framework.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we look to the future in this region, I hope we can be much more\nambitious,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The meetings in Cebu City included the 20th ASEAN Defence Ministers\u2019\nMeeting (ADMM) and the 13th ASEAN Defence Ministers\u2019 Meeting-Plus\n(ADMM-Plus), attended by defence ministers from the United States,\nChina, South Korea, Japan, Australia and India, although China did not\nsend its defence minister this year.<\/p>",
