        "content": "<p>U.S. company appoints RCA distributor<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): General Electric of the United States,<br>\nyesterday, appointed PT Mahameru Antarnusa Niaga of the Artha<br>\nGraha Group, as the distributor of RCA electronic appliances in<br>\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We will strive to gain at least 2 percent of the appliance<br>\nmarket in Indonesia by next year,&quot; Mahameru&apos;s president Hendra<br>\nPriatna said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the company would market appliances such as<br>\nmicrowaves, refrigerators, and washing machines.<\/p>\n<p>Mahameru is also the distributor of RCA audio-video products<br>\nunder an agreement with Thomson Consumer Electronics of France,<br>\nsigned in the middle of last year.<\/p>\n<p>Mahameru is owned by PT Artha Graha Wahana, a subsidiary of PT<br>\nTelagamas Pertiwi. The three companies are members of Artha Graha<br>\nwhich is controlled by businessman, Tomy Winata.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to RCA, Artha Graha, through its separate<br>\nsubsidiaries, also distributes Sony audio-video products, Nokia<br>\nhand-phones and Compact computers. The company also operates two<br>\nretail shops which specialize in electronics.<\/p>\n<p>General Electric has control over RCA appliances while Thomson<br>\nmanages audio-video products.<\/p>\n<p>RCA, previously known as Radio Corporation of America, was set<br>\nup in October 1919 as the patent holder of General Electric and<br>\nMarconi. Since then, RCA has made numerous technological<br>\ninventions.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Mahameru began marketing RCA audio-video products<br>\nsuch as televisions, VHS players and recorders, video CDs, CD<br>\nplayers, tape recorders, radios and digital integrated receiver<br>\ndecoders.<\/p>\n<p>Thomson&apos;s general marketing manager, Daniel Seow, said that<br>\nhis company owned a manufacturing plant in Batam, Riau, with a<br>\nmonthly capacity of 8,000 to 10,000 TV sets.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the facility would also produce satellite<br>\ndecoders for Indovision, the country&apos;s cable television provider.<br>\n(icn)<\/p>",
