U.S. company appoints RCA distributor<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): General Electric of the United States,
\nyesterday, appointed PT Mahameru Antarnusa Niaga of the Artha
\nGraha Group, as the distributor of RCA electronic appliances in
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
"We will strive to gain at least 2 percent of the appliance
\nmarket in Indonesia by next year," Mahameru's president Hendra
\nPriatna said.<\/p>\n
He said the company would market appliances such as
\nmicrowaves, refrigerators, and washing machines.<\/p>\n
Mahameru is also the distributor of RCA audio-video products
\nunder an agreement with Thomson Consumer Electronics of France,
\nsigned in the middle of last year.<\/p>\n
Mahameru is owned by PT Artha Graha Wahana, a subsidiary of PT
\nTelagamas Pertiwi. The three companies are members of Artha Graha
\nwhich is controlled by businessman, Tomy Winata.<\/p>\n
In addition to RCA, Artha Graha, through its separate
\nsubsidiaries, also distributes Sony audio-video products, Nokia
\nhand-phones and Compact computers. The company also operates two
\nretail shops which specialize in electronics.<\/p>\n
General Electric has control over RCA appliances while Thomson
\nmanages audio-video products.<\/p>\n
RCA, previously known as Radio Corporation of America, was set
\nup in October 1919 as the patent holder of General Electric and
\nMarconi. Since then, RCA has made numerous technological
\ninventions.<\/p>\n
Last year, Mahameru began marketing RCA audio-video products
\nsuch as televisions, VHS players and recorders, video CDs, CD
\nplayers, tape recorders, radios and digital integrated receiver
\ndecoders.<\/p>\n
Thomson's general marketing manager, Daniel Seow, said that
\nhis company owned a manufacturing plant in Batam, Riau, with a
\nmonthly capacity of 8,000 to 10,000 TV sets.<\/p>\n
He said that the facility would also produce satellite
\ndecoders for Indovision, the country's cable television provider.
