        "content": "<p>U.S. broadcasting firm plans to expand into Indonesia<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Besides the overseas satellite-based telephone<br>\nsystem and other telecommunications services, WorldSpace, a U.S.<br>\nsatellite-based radio broadcasting firm based also plans to<br>\nexpand into Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>WorldSpace's vice president for Asian affairs, Mike Yuh-Hung,<br>\nsaid yesterday his company would launch three satellites to offer<br>\ndirect digital delivery radio service.<\/p>\n<p>Yuh-Hung said WorldSpace would operate three satellites with<br>\nthe L-band working at the 1.5 gigahertz frequency.<\/p>\n<p>\"The first satellite, called Afristar, will be launched in<br>\nmid-1998, the second, Asiastar, in late 1998 and the last one,<br>\nCaribstar, in mid-1999.\"<\/p>\n<p>He said the Asiastar satellite would be placed at the 105<br>\ndegree east longitude and be in orbit over Riau.<\/p>\n<p>He said WorldSpace would offer special portable radios with<br>\nchips allowing people to listen the same broadcasting station<br>\nwithin a 14-million-square-kilometer area.<\/p>\n<p>\"Radio broadcasting stations have to lease channels at one of<br>\nthe three satellites to have such a global service,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Washington-based WorldSpace was set up in 1990 to answer<br>\ncritical information needs by delivering a broad spectrum of<br>\nhigh-fidelity radio channels, ranging from amplitude modulation<br>\n(AM)-equivalent to compact disc (CD)-quality sound.<\/p>\n<p>Yuh-Hung said France's Alcatel made the satellites, while<br>\nEuropean consortium Arianespace would launch them.<\/p>\n<p>He said WorldSpace was negotiating with several Indonesian<br>\nfirms to form a joint venture firm.<\/p>\n<p>\"We need the presence of a joint venture company to serve and<br>\nrun the business in Indonesia.\"<\/p>\n<p>Several overseas satellite-based telephone and other<br>\ntelecommunications services are interested in entering Indonesia.<br>\nThey include Iridium, Globalstar and Inmarsat.<\/p>\n<p>Hughes Communications Inc also plans to enter Indonesia with<br>\nits new business, Spaceway, a Ka-band spectrum satellite system<br>\noffering \"bandwidth-on-demand\" -- to transmit and receive voice,<br>\ndata, video, audio and multimedia at any time from any place.<br>\n(icn)<\/p>",
