U.S. banks in Vietnam<\/p>\n
HANOI (Reuter): Bank of America and Citibank received licenses
\nyesterday from Vietnam's central State Bank authorizing them to
\nopen branches in Hanoi, officials said.<\/p>\n
They will be the first U.S. banks to open branches in Vietnam
\nsince the Vietnam War ended in 1975.<\/p>\n
"We got a license to set up a branch in Hanoi," Bank of
\nAmerica's country manager Luu H. Le told Reuters.<\/p>\n
"We got the approval in principle -- that's the biggest thing
\n-- allowing us to proceed with preparations for branch opening,"
\nCitibank resident representative Chuyen D. Uong said.<\/p>\n
A State Bank spokesman confirmed both U.S. banks had received
\nlicenses.<\/p>\n
He declined to say which foreign banks would be the next to
\nget branch permits. Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank was the last one
\nto receive a license, in September.<\/p>",
