        "content": "<p>U.S. and Vietnam discuss flight pact<\/p>\n<p>HANOI (AFP): Vietnam and the United States will begin<br>\nhammering out a bilateral aviation accord today that would pave<br>\nthe way for direct flights between the two countries.<\/p>\n<p>However, U.S. airline executives say that nonstop flights<br>\nbetween the two countries were still a long way off given the<br>\nsmall size of the market.<\/p>\n<p>\"Unless these bilaterals produce an environment which makes it<br>\neconomically viable in the short term, I don't know that any U.S.<br>\ncarrier will do it,\" said Don Curran, United Airlines Pacific<br>\nSouth vice president.<\/p>\n<p>Curran said a likely first step would be code sharing<br>\nagreements between U.S. carriers and their partners in the<br>\nregion. For example, a U.S. carrier could carry passengers say,<br>\nto Japan on its own flight and then book seats on a Japanese<br>\nairline which already flies to Vietnam.<\/p>",
