U.S. accepts Sumadi as new Indonesian envoy<\/p>\n

The United States has accepted the nomination of Indonesia's
\nsenior diplomat Sumadi Brotodiningrat to represent Jakarta in
\nWashington D.C., the Minister of Foreign Affairs said Monday.<\/p>\n
Sumadi, the incumbent ambassador to Japan, will be officially
\ninducted for his new post by President Megawati Soekarnoputri
\nhere soon, and should be able to leave for Washington D.C. before
\nthe end of the month, Minister of Foreign Affairs Hassan Wirayuda
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The Washington job has been vacant since August when
\nDorodjatun Kuntjoro-Jakti was recalled home by President Megawati
\nto become the Coordinating Minister for the Economy.<\/p>\n
The delays in appointing the new envoy in Washington have
\nprompted criticisms about Jakarta's treatment of one of the
\nnation's most important foreign relationships.<\/p>\n
The criticisms were slightly tempered when Megawati decided to
\ngo ahead with an official trip to Washington one week after the
\nSept. 11 terrorist attacks on the United States.<\/p>\n
Hassan said on Monday that the President's visit in September
\nput Indonesia-U.S. relations on a positive new footing.<\/p>\n
He said the delay in the nomination process was partly caused
\nby a new ruling that requires the House of Representatives to
\napprove all nominations for Indonesian ambassadors.<\/p>\n
Sumadi served as director general of foreign economic
\nrelations before being appointed as the envoy to Japan in 1996.
\nHis previous postings included chief of the Indonesian mission at
\nthe United Nations in New York and Geneva.<\/p>\n
Hassan added that the plan to restructure and reorganize the
\nMinistry of Foreign Affairs had been approved by President
\nMegawati, and would be implemented this month.<\/p>\n
The plan calls for the establishment of new directorate
\ngenerals based on the main regions of Indonesia's foreign
\npolicies.<\/p>\n
The changes were deemed necessary to make the performance of
\nthe Ministry of Foreign Affairs more effective, he said.<\/p>",
