Urban water projects underway<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): New South Wales Water Management of Australia
\nand Generale Derresoux of France are expected to invest US$145
\nmillion in a joint development of water supply projects in
\nBandung of West Java and in Medan of North Sumatra.<\/p>\n
\"The two companies are now finalizing their feasibility
\nstudies at the project sites,\" Director General for Construction
\nDevelopment of the Ministry of Public Works, Rachmadi B.
\nSoemadhijo, told reporters after the opening of a three-day
\nworkshop yesterday.<\/p>\n
He said the Bandung project, which will cost $120 million,
\nwill include the installation of a water treatment plant for
\nprocessing waste and polluted water in the city, as well as the
\nconstruction of water supply and distribution facilities.<\/p>\n
The two companies will also get involved in the development of
\na water treatment plant in Medan, with an investment of $25
\nmillion. The planned project will be able to improve potable
\nwater supplies in the city, he said.<\/p>\n
Rachmadi expects that a deal on the projects will be signed by
\nthe middle of this year.<\/p>\n
The workshop, which was opened by Minister of Public Works
\nRadinal Moochtar, was held to follow up the cooperation on
\nhousing, watering and urban development between the ministry and
\nthe Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization
\nof Australia.<\/p>\n
Radinal said the workshop, which will be continued on Monday
\nand Tuesday in Bandung, will explore various opportunities for
\ncooperation on housing and irrigation technology, modular
\nbuilding practice, low-cost housing development, unification of
\ncodes and standards, testing and certification and various
