Urban agriculture needs more attention: Expert<\/p>\n
BOGOR (JP): Rector of the Bogor Institute of Agriculture (IPB)
\nSoleh Solahuddin said here Saturday it is time to pay more
\nattention to the development of urban agriculture in big cities.<\/p>\n
\"Urban agricultural development is needed in addition to the
\nfurther development of land-based agriculture in villages,\" Soleh
\nsaid at a ceremony marking the graduation of 324 students of the
\ninstitute.<\/p>\n
The development of urban agriculture is important, he said, to
\nhelp solve problems arising from the emergence of mega cities,
\nincluding Greater Jakarta, which attract a large number of people
\nmigrating for the better living conditions.<\/p>\n
In line with the fast growth of big cities, Soleh questioned
\nhow the agricultural sector could develop.<\/p>\n
As urban agriculture is mainly soilless and is applied using
\nmodern technology, the focus should be on the development of
\nbiotechnology, greenhouse technology, vertical development and
\nother agricultural systems, which are less dependent on nature,
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
He said he was confident that urban agriculture would become a
\nan industry which would focus on environmentally friendly mass
\nproduction.<\/p>\n
Soleh said the IPB has set up a special team, which has been
\nassigned to design agriculture paradigms for the 21st century.<\/p>\n
\"The paradigms worked out by the team will combine the
\ncomparative advantage, namely natural resources, and the
\ncomparative advantage, consisting of human resources and
\ntechnology,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said it was important to pay more attention to urban
\nagriculture in the country to ensure agriculture did not lag
\nbehind the rapid growth in industrialization.<\/p>\n
\"We have to be confident that agricultural institutes will
\nremain relevant and important in the current industrialization
\nera,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Soleh said that in order to strengthen IPB's existence as an
\nagricultural institute, a number of modifications ranging from
\neducational orientation to organization are now being conducted.<\/p>\n
The modifications will be designed in such a way that they are
\nconducive for human resource and technology development to
\nsupport urban agriculture or agro-based industries, he said.
