Along with voting for political parties and legislative
\ncandidates in the House of Representatives (DPR) and City\/Regency
\nCouncil (DPRD), voters will also select candidates for the
\nRegional Representatives Council (DPD). The DPD will consist of
\n550 elected members from all 32 provinces, who will form the
\nPeople's Consultative Assembly (MPR). This article is the second
\nof a 13-part series of profiles of 38 Jakarta candidates for the
\nDPD by The Jakarta Post's Bambang Nurbianto.<\/p>\n
HERMAN BENHARD LEOPOLD MANTIRI<\/p>\n

- West Kalimantan military commander<\/p>\n
- Udayana military commander (overseeing Bali, West and East Nusa
\nTenggara, and then East Timor)<\/p>\n
- Indonesian ambassador to Singapore<\/p>\n
My ambition is to create a safe and orderly Jakarta with
\nprosperous residents. Security must be seriously addressed as it
\nis a vital factor for dealing with other problems.<\/p>\n
We must also develop the city to be a better place for
\nresidents and foreign guests.<\/p>\n
A better transportation system is needed to ensure people's
\nmobility to help economic recovery. We must also address social
\nproblems like the increasing number of street children and
\nbeggars.<\/p>\n
I dream that in the future, Jakarta will be a role model for
\nother cities in Indonesia and the world. A capital that was in
\ngood condition would help Indonesia end this prolonged crisis.<\/p>\n
BIEM TRIANI BENJAMIN<\/p>\n

Education: Metropolitan State College, Denver, Colorado, the U.S.<\/p>\n

- Banten chapter of the Indonesian Private Radio Association

- Betawi Assembly (Bamus Betawi)<\/p>\n
- Betawi Culture Institute (LKB)<\/p>\n
Past and current jobs:<\/p>\n
- President director of etnikom radio<\/p>\n
- Owner of 11 other radio stations nationwide<\/p>\n
- Employee of PT Santos Jaya Abadi<\/p>\n
Frankly, I am concerned with the fate of the Betawi (native
\nJakartans), most of whom have been marginalized in various
\naspects of life, including education, social affairs and the
\neconomy.<\/p>\n
Therefore, as a Betawi person, I want to improve their lot.
\nBut I will not discriminate by only focusing on my ethnic group.
\nI think it is normal that I want to help people who are in need.<\/p>\n
One of my goals is to revise Law No. 34\/1999 on Jakarta as a
\nspecial administration. I want the revised law to give special
\ntreatment to the Betawi as the original inhabitants of the city.<\/p>\n
We can take Malaysia as an example, as that country gives
\nspecial treatment to the Malays. This may work for the Betawi,
\nalthough many may also object to it as they may think it is
\ndiscriminatory. In my opinion, such special treatment is needed
\nto help this group.<\/p>\n

I am very concerned with various social problems in the city.
\nI have dealt with these problems with some non-governmental
\norganizations, and this issue will also be my focus if I am
\nelected to the DPD.<\/p>\n
Poverty remains a big problem in Jakarta although there are
\nmany rich people. I believe that poverty is the root of all
\nsocial problems, including high crime rates, street children and
\nbeggars.<\/p>\n
My serious attention will be focused on improving people's
\nwelfare. I will take the (poverty) issue to any discussion with
\nmy colleagues from other regions. We want both the central and
\nregional governments to give more attention to this problem.<\/p>\n
If we can eradicate poverty, we can make Jakarta a better
\nplace to live. Many slum areas could be eliminated without
\nforcefully evicting people because the city would be able to
\naccommodate them in prepared areas.<\/p>",
