        "content": "<p>UNTAET, Australia will review Timor Gap treaty<\/p>\n<p>CANBERRA (Antara): The Australian government and the United<br>\nNations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET), along<br>\nwith representatives of the former Portuguese colony, are slated<br>\nto renegotiate the Timor Gap Treaty in Dili on Oct. 9-11.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer, Industry and<br>\nResources Minister Nick Minchin and Attorney General Daryl<br>\nWilliams will represent the Australian government in the<br>\nnegotiation, the three said here on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The Timor Gap Treaty between Indonesia and Australia will<br>\nexpire once the UN grants independence to East Timor.<\/p>\n<p>Australia welcomed the first phase of the negotiation on the<br>\nfuture of the oil exploration and exploitation of the gap.<\/p>\n<p>The negotiation aims to reach an agreement on the change of<br>\nthe treaty prior to East Timor&apos;s independence.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Hopefully, there would be other negotiations,&quot; Downer said.<\/p>\n<p>Australia and UNTAET have agreed that Australia could continue<br>\nits exploration of the gap once the former Indonesian province<br>\nbecomes independent.<\/p>\n<p>Two Australian companies, Phillips Petroleum Co and Multiplex<br>\nConstruction Pty Ltd last week announced they have begun<br>\nconstructing a 500-km-long gas pipe from the oil refinery field<br>\nin Bayu Undan in Timor Sea to Darwin, Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Bayu Undan is located at the southwest part of Zone A of the<br>\npresent Timor Gap Treaty.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia and Australia signed the treaty in December 1989 to<br>\nexplore and exploit oil and gas at the border between the two<br>\ncountries.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the treaty, the Timor gap was divided into three<br>\nzones -- Zone A in which both Indonesia and Australia get 50<br>\npercent of the royalty; the Australia-controlled Zone B in which<br>\nIndonesia gets 10 percent of the royalty; and the Indonesia-<br>\ncontrolled Zone C in which Australia gets 10 percent of the<br>\nroyalty.<\/p>",
