At least 1,400 unregistered motorcycles, mostly used as ojek
\n(motorcycle taxis) in Sukabumi district, have been confiscated by
\nthe police over the past several weeks.<\/p>\n
Sukabumi Police chief Comr. Pujiono Dulrahman said the
\noperation was aimed at getting rid of the town's image as a
\nrepository of stolen motorcycles.<\/p>\n
\"This three month operation was carried out to mend our image
\n-- especially in the Pelabuhan Ratu district -- as a dumping
\nplace for stolen motorcycles,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The police precinct, which is under the jurisdiction of Bogor
\nCity Police, had previously conducted a campaign to encourage the
\nlocal community to register their motorcycles.<\/p>\n
The campaign was followed by two clampdowns. In the first
\nclampdown only warnings were issued; in the second, persons
\nriding unregistered motorcycles were hit with fines and their
\nbikes confiscated, he added.<\/p>\n
\"The owners of the motorcycles can claim their machines back
\nonce they present us with the appropriate legal documents,\"
\nPujiono said.<\/p>\n
He added that the operation was also conducted because of the
\nhigh level of motorcycle theft in Bogor.<\/p>\n
Seized motorcycles without police registration numbers, or
\nthose that have not been claimed within three months, will be put
\nup for auction, according to Pujiono.<\/p>\n
