'Unprofessional police need better role models'<\/p>\n

As more and more police officers committed crimes, extra effort
\nby the officers' superiors would be needed to supervise their
\nbehavioral development, a noted criminologist said on Friday.<\/p>\n
Adrianus Meliala said senior policemen should pay more
\nattention to their subordinates who, in general, tended to suffer
\nfrom stress which later led them to become criminals themselves.<\/p>\n
"It's difficult to verify why and how the policemen have
\ncommitted criminal offenses, but they must try to look up to
\ntheir superiors as role models. In this case, a good role model
\nis needed," Adrianus, who is an advisor to National Police chief
\nGen. Da'i Bachtiar, told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
Two incidents on arbitrary shootings involving members of the
\nforce's elite Mobile Brigade (Brimob) have taken place within the
\nlast two weeks.<\/p>\n
The latest incident occurred on Thursday evening following a
\ngame of domino on Jl. Tanah Abang III No. 15 in Central Jakarta,
\nbetween First Brig. Andi Setiawan and officer Stefen of the
\nBrimob Central Headquarters at Kelapa Dua subdistrict of
\nCimanggis district in South Jakarta, who played as a pair against
\nanother pair, a City Police headquarters officer, identified only
\nas Totok, and a businessman, identified as Wasrab.<\/p>\n
Central Jakarta police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Sukrawardi Dahlan
\nsaid while quoting witnesses that Andi, who was a group
\ncommander, pulled out his pistol and shot Sugiyono, a security
\nguard working for PT Astri Anila Anggin, who happened to be a
\nspectator.<\/p>\n
Sukrawardi, however, did not mention the true cause of the
\nincident. "It was just an accident," he said.<\/p>\n
Adrianus admitted that monitoring the Brimob members was
\nconsidered the toughest task in the police force because of its
\nmilitaristic style.<\/p>\n
"And it's impossible to screen those who can join the unit
\nbecause it applies a recruitment criteria, similar to those
\napplied at the traffic police and detectives units," he said.<\/p>\n
City police spokesman Sr. Comr. Prasetyo told reporters on
\nFriday that, deliberately or not, Andi would also be prosecuted
\nas well as face a possible dismissal from the force.<\/p>\n
Earlier on Feb. 20, First Private Mintori shot and killed
\nNurhikmah, a resident of Duren Sawit district in East Jakarta,
\nwho was passing the area on a motorbike along with his brother
\nSanusi.<\/p>\n
Mintori reportedly went berserk because he only got Rp 5,000
\n(less than 60 US cents) while extorting members of a gambling
\nring, and so fired his weapon randomly at passersby.<\/p>\n
The police force recently dismissed Mintori and officially
\napologized to the family of Nurhikmah and the residents.<\/p>",
