Unknown group attacks cafe, restaurant in Kemang<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Hundreds of men attacked the Salsa Club cafe and
\nthe Pasir Putih Seafood Market Grill & Bar, both in Kemang, South
\nJakarta, on Saturday night, causing losses of hundreds of
\nmillions of rupiah.<\/p>\n
Kemang area is well known as home to many cafes, restaurants,
\nand art galleries.<\/p>\n
Several witnesses told The Jakarta Post that the gang, all
\ndressed in black, arrived at Pasir Putih on Jl. Kemang Raya in
\nthree minibuses at about 11 p.m. and immediately stormed into the
\nrestaurant.<\/p>\n
\"There were about 200 guests who were dining when they came
\nthrough the front door and started destroying stuff,\" A. Ridwan,
\ngeneral affair manager of the restaurant, said.<\/p>\n
He said the men were armed with daggers, swords, sickles,
\nsteel chains, even axes.<\/p>\n
\"Our guests panicked and ran to save themselves through the
\nbackdoor. Some of our guests were cut by broken glass. One of our
\nemployees turned off the lights so the mob could not see but they
\nhad their flashlights ready.\"<\/p>\n
The group forced several guests to hand over their cellular
\nphones and wallets.<\/p>\n
\"That wasn't just a raid, that was also a robbery, I'm telling
\nyou,\" Ridwan said, adding that the management did not know if any
\nguests had been attacked by the group.<\/p>\n
Ridwan said the unidentified men destroyed all the musical
\ninstruments and sound system components. The mob also destroyed
\ncash registers and other equipment.<\/p>\n
\"We estimate that we lost Rp 1 billion from the attack,\"
\nRidwan said.<\/p>\n
He added that he did not have any idea where the mob had come
\nfrom.<\/p>\n
\"But, I'm sure they were not from FPI (the Islamic Defenders
\nFront) because these people were much more violent than FPI,\"
\nRidwan said, referring to the group known to have been raiding
\nentertainment centers in the capital.<\/p>\n
The mob left Pasir Putih and went directly to the Salsa Club
\nwhich is located some 200 meters away.<\/p>\n
Marketing and communication manager of the club, Teges P.
\nSoraya, said the mob destroyed expensive equipment including ice
\ncream machines and cash registers.<\/p>\n
\"They even stole one of our VCD players,\" Teges said.<\/p>\n
She said that the mob destroyed many bottles of alcoholic
\nbeverages.<\/p>\n
\"But they drank some of the beverages, too,\" Teges said.<\/p>\n
Both Ridwan and Teges said that they had yet to decide if they
\nwanted to file a lawsuit against the attackers.<\/p>\n
\"Who could we sue? We don't know who these people are,\" Teges
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Ridwan said that his business would wait for the police to
\nidentify the mob so they could sue the attackers.<\/p>\n
Separately when contacted by the Post by phone, Mampang Police
\nsubprecinct chief Asst. Supt. Suwito said the police had yet to
\nidentify the group.<\/p>\n
\"We're still investigating and so far, we haven't made any
