Kerinci<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Researchers from Flora and Fauna International<br>\nhave confirmed the existence of a primate not previously known in<br>\nthe Kerinci Seblat National Park, Kompas daily newspaper reported<br>\nyesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Three members of the research team said they sighted the<br>\nprimate after months of surveying the national park. The<br>\nexistence of the primate was first reported last year.<\/p>\n<p>The research team described the ape as between 115 and 120 cm<br>\ntall, weighing around 75 kg, with reddish fur. They also found<br>\nthat unlike other apes, this one grabs its food with its hands<br>\nrather than its teeth. Provisionally, the researchers classified<br>\nthe primate as a combination of several known apes including<br>\norangutan, lutung, siamang, gibbon and ungko.<\/p>\n<p>The preliminary result of the Orang Pendek (Short Person)<br>\nProject has now been reported to the World Wide Fund for Nature<br>\nand also the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) in Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>The research team includes Debbie Martyr of Cambridge<br>\nUniversity, Yanuar of Nasional University in Jakarta and a<br>\nphotographer.<\/p>\n<p>A photograph of the primate species was displayed at the<br>\nNational Building in Sungaipenuh city in Jambi, according to<br>\nKompas.
