University neutral in nuke fray<\/p>\n
SEMARANG, Central Java: Diponegoro University has pledged
\nneutrality in the burning controversy over the government's plan
\nto build nuclear power plants on Mount Muria, Jepara.<\/p>\n
Rector Muladi said on Saturday that the university's academic
\nconcern was to provide objective academic assessment of the
\nproject.<\/p>\n
\"Never force us to say whether we support or reject the
\nproject,\" Muladi told the visiting members of the House of
\nRepresentatives Commission overseeing technology.<\/p>\n
The government will decide whether it will go ahead with the
\nproject and what the academics can do is provide data on its
\nsocial, economic and political impact, he added.<\/p>\n
The first power plant is expected to go into operation in
\n2003, producing about 800 megawatts of electricity. (har)<\/p>",
